Electrical engineering CVs fail for a reason that has nothing to do with engineering ability: the title covers at least four unrelated jobs. Power systems, controls and automation, electronics and circuit design, and building services are all called electrical engineering, and a CV that does not declare which one it is gets filtered out of all four.
The second structural fact is that licensure and codes are gates rather than arguments. PE, EIT or FE status, and familiarity with the specific code family that governs the work, NEC, IEEE, IEC or the local equivalent, tend to be screened as pass or fail conditions before anyone reads your project list.
What actually differentiates two licensed engineers with similar backgrounds is the scale and the responsibility of the systems they have signed off on. Voltage levels, load sizes, project value and whether you stamped the drawings say more about seniority than any adjective.

A senior or lead engineer is judged on systems and people: multi discipline coordination, client facing design decisions, review of other engineers work, and accountability for a schedule that other trades depend on.

Common mistakes on this type of resume
- Not naming the sub discipline in the first two lines. Fix: Write "electrical engineer, medium voltage power distribution" rather than "electrical engineer with diverse experience". Precision is what gets you shortlisted, not breadth.
- Listing software without depth. Fix: "AutoCAD, ETAP, SKM" is a filter pass but not evidence. Attach a tool to a deliverable: "short circuit and coordination studies in ETAP for a 34.5 kV substation".
- Omitting licensure status entirely. Fix: State it plainly, including in progress. "EIT, sitting the PE in 2026" is far better than silence, which readers interpret as neither.
- Project lists with no scale. Fix: Every project should carry a magnitude: voltage, load, square footage, capacity or budget. Without it, a warehouse fit out and a substation read identically.
- Ignoring the jurisdiction. Fix: Codes, licensure and utility interconnection rules are local. Name the states, provinces or countries you have worked under. Experience does not transfer silently across borders.

How much does the PE actually matter?
It depends entirely on the sector. In consulting and building design it is close to mandatory for advancement because someone has to stamp drawings. In manufacturing, electronics and much of industry it is optional and rarely decisive. Read the adverts in your target sector before investing years in it.
I work in controls but want to move to power. How do I position that?
Lead with the overlap that is real, one line diagrams, motor control, protection and instrumentation, and be honest about the gap. Employers hire across adjacent disciplines regularly, but not from a CV that pretends the disciplines are the same.
Should I list every project?
No. List the ones that show range of scale and type, roughly five to eight, and summarise the rest in a single line. A project list that runs for a page stops being read.
How do I show impact when I am one engineer on a large team?
Describe your scope precisely rather than claiming the whole outcome. "Responsible for the lighting and power design of three of eleven buildings" is credible and tells the reader exactly what you can be trusted with.
Does a masters degree help?
It helps most in specialised technical areas such as power electronics, protection or grid studies, and in research oriented employers. For general design work, a PE and project experience carry more weight than a second degree.
How long should the CV be?
Two pages is normal, and three is accepted for senior engineers with a genuine project record. Keep the first page to summary, licensure, tools and the two most recent roles.
