Motion Designer Sample

A full Motion Designer resume example, section by section: the wording used and what to change for your own.

🇺🇸 US Format

For a motion designer the reel does the persuading, which means the CV has a narrower and more specific job: get the reel opened, and tell the reader what kind of motion designer you are before they open it. A CV that tries to do the reel's job by describing how beautiful the work was is spending its space badly.

The kind matters more than most candidates think. Broadcast and title design, social and performance content, explainer and product motion, and UI motion inside an actual product are four different hires with different tools, different turnarounds and different reviewers. An advert is looking for one of them. A CV that just says motion designer forces the reader to open the reel to find out, and most will not.

The sample below leads with the reel link and the category of work, then uses the experience section to show volume, turnaround and who signed the work off, which is what a studio or in house team is actually assessing.

Why is this resume successful?

  • Result-Oriented Metrics: Instead of job descriptions, concrete numbers like 'Increased sales by 15%' are included to immediately grab the attention of HR.
  • ATS-Friendly Structure: Instead of complex graphics, a clean design that ATS bots can easily read is used.
  • Strong Action Verbs: Instead of weak words like 'Did' or 'Worked', strong verbs like 'Managed', 'Developed', and 'Optimized' are used.
  • Concise Profile Summary: Instead of a generic career objective, a professional summary highlights the value the candidate will bring to the organization.

ATS keywords for this role

Applicant tracking systems compare your resume with the job posting. The terms below come up most often for this role. Use the ones that are genuinely true for you, in the sentence where you actually did the work, not in a keyword list at the bottom.

  • motion design / motion graphics Both are searched and they are not interchangeable in every market. Use whichever the advert uses in the headline and include the other once in the body.
  • After Effects Table stakes rather than a differentiator, but its absence is disqualifying in a keyword screen. List it and move on quickly.
  • Cinema 4D / Blender This is where 2D and 3D candidates separate. Naming the specific package matters because pipelines are built around one of them.
  • storyboarding / animatic Signals you work from concept rather than only executing someone else's boards, which is the difference between a mid and senior hire.
  • brand guidelines Common in in house adverts. It says you can work inside a system rather than making every project a personal style exercise.
  • sound design Rare on CVs and frequently valued, because a reel cut to sound reads as finished work rather than an exercise.
  • Figma / design systems Only relevant for product and UI motion roles, where it is often a hard requirement. Including it in the wrong context signals you have not read the advert.

Level and scope

Level in motion design is read from autonomy and turnaround, not years. A junior executes boards someone else approved. A mid designer takes a brief and returns something close to final. A senior sets the direction, decides what will not be animated, and can say no to a request that will not survive the timeline.

The other level signal is volume under constraint. Producing forty social cutdowns a month to a template is a real and valuable skill, and it is a completely different job from producing one title sequence a quarter. Say which one you did, because a studio hiring for the first will not be impressed by the second and the reverse is equally true.

Common mistakes on this type of resume

  • No reel link, or a link that needs a password, or one that has expired. This ends the application immediately and it happens constantly. Fix: Put a plain, working URL in the contact block at the top, test it logged out, and keep it live for the whole search. If the work is under NDA, host a version you are allowed to show.
  • A software list standing in for a body of work. After Effects, Premiere, Illustrator, Cinema 4D and nothing about what was made. Fix: Keep the list short and put the work first. Cut a 30 second product launch film from board to delivery in nine days, in After Effects and Cinema 4D.
  • Describing the aesthetic instead of the job. Phrases like visually stunning and eye catching, which every candidate claims and none prove. Fix: Replace with facts the reader can check in the reel. Fifteen second vertical cutdowns for paid social, delivered weekly against a fixed brand system.
  • Hiding whether the work was solo or a pipeline. A reel full of high end 3D from someone who only did the compositing creates a bad surprise in the interview. Fix: State your part per project in one clause. Animation and compositing, with modelling by the 3D team.
  • The CV designed so heavily that it cannot be parsed, on the theory that a designer's CV should look designed. Fix: Keep the document single column and text based and let the reel carry the visual argument. The CV is read by software first and by a producer second, and neither is judging its typography.

Frequently asked questions

Do I even need a CV if I have a reel?

Yes, and for two reasons. Applications are screened by software that cannot watch a reel, and a producer needs to know your availability, tools and the scale of work you have delivered before booking a call.

How long should the reel be, and should the CV say?

Sixty to ninety seconds, with the strongest shot first. It is worth adding a one line breakdown link on the CV for reviewers who want to know exactly what you did on each piece.

Should I include client names?

Yes where you are permitted to. Client names are the fastest credibility signal in this field. If a project is under NDA, describe the sector and scale instead of naming it.

I am freelance. How do I present a lot of short contracts?

Group them under a single freelance heading with continuous dates, then list notable clients and projects underneath. A list of eleven separate two month entries reads as instability when it is actually a normal freelance year.

Is 3D necessary now?

Not universally, but it decides which adverts you are competitive for. Be accurate about your level rather than implying more, because a pipeline role will test it in the first week.

Should my CV match my reel's visual style?

In restraint, yes: one accent colour and a typeface you actually chose. What it should not do is adopt multi column layouts, background images or text inside graphics, all of which break the parse.
