How to Tailor Your CV to a Job Description (and Pass the ATS)
Sending the same generic CV to every job is the fastest way to get ignored. The candidates who get interviews tailor their CV to each role, matching the language of the job description so both the ATS and the recruiter see an obvious fit.
Tailoring does not mean rewriting from scratch. It means adjusting the parts that matter in ten to fifteen minutes per application.
Read the job description like a checklist
Every job description is a list of what the employer wants. Read it twice and highlight:
- The hard skills and tools named (e.g. Excel, Python, SAP).
- The responsibilities repeated or listed first, these are the priorities.
- The exact job title and any recurring phrases.
These are the signals you will mirror in your CV.
Match keywords exactly
ATS software scores your CV against the job description. If the posting says "project management" and your CV says "managed projects," you may score lower. Use the employer's exact wording wherever it is honest to do so.
- Mirror key terms in your skills section and work experience.
- Include the job title you are applying for if it fits your background.
- Spell out acronyms once, e.g. "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)", so both versions are found.
Reorder to put the most relevant first
Recruiters spend seconds on each CV. Move the experience and achievements that match the role to the top of each section. If a bullet point does not support this application, cut it or push it down.
Quantify results that match their goals
If the role is about growth, lead with growth numbers. If it is about efficiency, lead with time and cost savings.
- Weak: "Responsible for social media."
- Strong: "Grew Instagram following 140% in six months, driving 25% more inbound leads."
Numbers make your fit undeniable and give the recruiter something to remember.
Keep one master CV, then adapt
Maintain a complete "master" CV with everything you have done. For each application, copy it and trim, reorder, and re-keyword it for that specific job. You keep your history in one place and ship a targeted version every time.
Let a tool do the matching for you
Comparing your CV to a job description by hand is slow. An ATS analysis tool can score the match, show which keywords you are missing, and suggest fixes in seconds, so every application you send is already tuned to the role.
