What it actually does
The generator reads two things: the CV you already built here, and the job posting you paste in. It then writes a letter that connects specific lines from your history to specific requirements in the posting, in the language you are applying in.
It does not invent employers, dates or achievements. If your CV says you managed a team of four, the letter says four. That constraint is the point: a cover letter that stretches the truth is the fastest way to lose an interview once someone checks.
You get an editor, not a locked file. Every paragraph is editable, you can regenerate a section you dislike, and you download a PDF when it reads the way you want. Most people rewrite the opening line and leave the rest.
What makes a cover letter get read
The person opening it has your CV in the other tab. They already know where you worked. What they do not know is why this job, and why you think you can do it. A letter that summarises the CV answers neither question, which is why so many get skimmed and closed.
The first sentence carries most of the weight. Naming the role and one concrete reason you are a fit beats any opening that begins with the words I am writing to apply. After that, two short paragraphs are enough: one that ties your strongest relevant result to what the posting asks for, one that says something true about the company or the team.
Length is a hard limit in practice. Under one page, three or four paragraphs, no restating the CV in prose. If you cannot say it in that space, the extra words are not helping you.
The mistakes that cost interviews
One letter sent to twenty companies with the name swapped. Recruiters recognise the shape of a generic letter within a sentence, and a wrong company name left in by accident is an instant no. If you only personalise one thing, make it the first paragraph.
Claiming traits instead of showing them. Hard working, detail oriented and passionate are unverifiable and everyone writes them. A single sentence about something you actually did carries more than a list of adjectives.
Apologising for what you lack. If you are missing one requirement out of eight, do not open by pointing at it. Write about the seven, and let the interview handle the eighth.

Common questions
Do recruiters still read cover letters?
Some do, some never open them, and you cannot tell which in advance. Where a letter matters most is when your CV needs context: a career change, a gap, a move to another country, or an application where you are close but not an exact match.
Will it sound like it was written by AI?
The draft has the usual tells: even sentence length and safe phrasing. That is why the editor exists. Rewrite the opening in your own words and cut one adjective per paragraph, and it stops sounding generated.
Does the letter need to be ATS friendly too?
It gets parsed the same way a CV does when a system accepts one, so plain text and a normal structure help. But the ranking work is done by your CV; the letter is read by a person or not at all.
Can I write one in a different language from my CV?
Yes. The letter is generated in the interface language you are using, so switch the language first if you are applying abroad. Write in the language of the posting, not the language of the country you live in.
Should I address it to a named person?
If you can find the name in two minutes, use it. If not, a role based greeting is fine and far better than a wrong name. Do not use To whom it may concern.
What file format do I send?
PDF, unless the posting asks for something else or the application form has a text box, in which case paste the text without formatting.
