The Complete Job Interview Preparation Guide

You got the interview, the CV did its job. Now preparation separates the offer from the polite rejection. Here is a practical framework to walk in confident and prepared.

Research like it is your job

Before the interview, understand:

  • The company: what they do, who their customers are, recent news, their mission and values.
  • The role: re-read the job description and map your experience to each requirement.
  • The people: look up your interviewers on LinkedIn to understand their background.

Walking in with genuine knowledge of the company instantly sets you apart.

Master the STAR method

Most interview questions are behavioural: *Tell me about a time when...*. Answer with STAR:

  • Situation: set the context briefly.
  • Task: what you needed to achieve.
  • Action: what *you* specifically did.
  • Result: the outcome, ideally with a number.

Prepare 5-6 STAR stories covering leadership, conflict, failure, and a big win. You can adapt them to almost any question.

Prepare for the common questions

  • *Tell me about yourself*, a 60-second pitch: present, past, why this role.
  • *Why do you want this job?*, connect your goals to the company and role.
  • *What is your greatest weakness?*, a real one, plus how you are actively improving it.
  • *Why are you leaving your current role?*, stay positive; never bad-mouth an employer.

Ask smart questions

An interview is a two-way conversation. Always prepare questions such as:

  • What does success look like in this role in the first 6 months?
  • What are the biggest challenges the team is facing?
  • How would you describe the team culture?

Thoughtful questions show genuine interest and help *you* evaluate *them*.

Handle logistics and body language

Test your tech for video calls, dress appropriately, arrive early, and bring copies of your CV. Make eye contact, listen fully before answering, and it is fine to pause and think.

Follow up

Send a short, personalised thank-you email within 24 hours. Reference something specific from the conversation and reaffirm your interest. It is a small effort that many candidates skip.

Practise out loud

Rehearsing in your head is not enough. Practise answers aloud, ideally with a friend or an AI interview coach that asks realistic questions and gives feedback, so the real thing feels familiar.
